Curriculum
Christ the King P.S. offers a broad, challenging curriculum based on
the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. The curriculum at Christ the
King is taught in accordance with our Teaching and Learning Policy and
includes the following subject areas:
Literacy
- Consists of a 2 hour uninterrupted literacy block - 1 hour
reading & 1 hour writing.
- Is overseen by a junior and a senior literacy coordinator.
- Addresses the needs of individual children which are identified
through testing conducted at the beginning of the year and at the
end of the year.
- Is supported by a Reading recovery intervention program for
grade one students having difficulty and other school based
intervention programs for students in grades 2 - 6.
- Is supported by a buddy program.
Mathematics
- SINE (Success in Numeracy Education) school - a framework for
best practice in teaching and learning math.
- Is overseen by a Mathematics coordinator.
- Uses a variety of strategies including games, concrete materials
and equipment to allow the children to understand what they are
learning.
Religious Education
- Based on the Diocesan Program ‘To Know, Worship and Love’
- Class masses & liturgies.
- Is supported by a Religious Education Coordinator.
- Sacramental programs for first Reconciliation & Eucharist in
grade 3 occur every year.
- Sacramental program for Confirmation in grades 5 & 6.
Confirmation is held every 2 years.
Integrated curriculum
- Is used to teach the subjects of Science, Health, Humanities,
Civics & Citizenship and some aspects of the Arts and L.O.T.E..
- Grades 4-6 incorporate aspects of the topic they are studying
into their literacy block where appropriate.
- Incorporates incursions and excursions to support the program.
The Arts
- Class teachers incorporate performing and visual arts into their
integrated curriculum and other areas of the curriculum.
Specialist Subjects
- Students have the following specialist programs for a 45 min
session each week:
- Library
- Vietnamese L.O.T.E.
- Physical Education – Grade 5/6 students are also involved in
the Sunshine District of Interschool Sports and the grade 3/4
students have a term of tennis. Grades Prep to 4 also have a 10
day intensive swimming program during the year.
